~~Raku firing of ceramics is an old Japanese technique which characteristically produces the contrast of smoky matte areas with smooth enamel and shiny metallic glazes. Once glazed and heated to extremely high temperature, the ceramics are thrown into combustible organic materials such as straw, leaves, paper. The "smoke" appears in the areas where no glaze at all was applied, creating that signature finish.
